World Giraffe Day: Celebrating Earth’s Gentle Giants with Birders Lens
Every year on June 21st, the world pauses to honor one of nature’s most iconic and elegant creatures — the giraffe. This date isn’t random; it aligns with the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, a fitting tribute to the tallest land mammal on Earth. At Birders Lens, we join the world in raising awareness and celebrating these towering beauties, whose presence in Uganda’s wild north remains one of the country’s quiet treasures.
The Four Giraffe Species
While most people know the giraffe as one species, scientific research reveals four distinct species, each with unique markings and range:
1. Northern Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
2. Southern Giraffe (Giraffa giraffa)
3. Masai Giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi)
4. Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa reticulata)
Within the Northern Giraffe, we find Rothschild’s Giraffe, also known as the Nubian giraffe, a critically important subspecies that Uganda proudly protects.

Uganda’s Giraffes: The Rothschild’s (Nubian) Giraffe
Uganda is home to the largest population of Rothschild’s giraffes in the wild, and their conservation story is one of resilience. You can spot them in:
- Murchison Falls National Park, the best place to view large herds majestically wandering the savannah.
- Kidepo Valley National Park, offering raw, untouched beauty with giraffes among the highlights.
- Lake Mburo National Park, where giraffes were reintroduced successfully in recent years.
- These giraffes are recognized by their light coats with fewer, less-defined patches, and no markings below the knees, almost like they’re wearing white socks!

Giraffes and Birds: A Symbiotic Friendship Bird lovers, rejoice!
Giraffes have a unique relationship with birds especially the oxpeckers that perch on their bodies. These birds feed on ticks, dead skin, and parasites, offering a natural cleaning service. In return, giraffes offer food and protection from predators. This interaction is a beautiful example of mutualism in the wild, where each species benefits. And for wildlife photographers, it creates unforgettable moments giraffes with oxpeckers fluttering around their necks, silhouetted against the African sun.

Did You Know?
- A giraffe’s heart can weigh up to 11 kilograms and pumps blood up a 2-meter neck — a true engineering marvel.
- They only sleep for about 30 minutes to 2 hours a day.
- Despite their height, giraffes are incredibly quiet, communicating through subsonic sounds inaudible to human ears.
- Giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans – just much longer.
