As Uganda celebrates Heroes Day, we at Birders Lens pause to honor and spotlight the exceptional individuals whose unwavering passion, leadership, and commitment have shaped the face of our tourism and conservation landscape.
Tourism in Uganda isn’t just an industry it’s a calling, a lifeline for communities, a bridge to the world, and a beacon for conservation. Today, we shine a light on the heroes both prominent and unsung who keep that light burning brightly.
Our Tourism and Conservation Heroes
1. Lily Ajarova – CEO, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB)
A passionate conservationist and strategist, Lily has led efforts to globally position Uganda as the “Pearl of Africa.” Her focus on sustainable tourism and strong branding has brought Uganda into the global tourism spotlight.
2. Hon. Mugarra Martin Bahinduka – Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife & Antiquities
An advocate for eco-tourism and community engagement, Hon. Mugarra has pushed for policies that blend development with environmental stewardship, ensuring tourism uplifts and protects.
3. Mrs. Doreen Katusiime – Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism
Her tireless work behind the scenes has ensured policy continuity, effective governance, and sector growth, making her a pillar in Uganda’s tourism architecture.
4. Dr. James Musinguzi – Executive Director, Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC)
A transformative leader, Dr. Musinguzi has revived UWEC as an education and conservation hub, fostering wildlife awareness across generations.
5. Amos Wekesa – Founder, Great Lakes Safaris
From humble beginnings, Amos built one of Uganda’s premier tour brands. He’s a leading tourism advocate and a shining example of entrepreneurship, vision, and national pride.
6. Byaruhanga Herbert – Birding Pioneer and Conservationist
A founding voice in Uganda’s birding community, Herbert has inspired countless local and international birders. His dedication to avitourism has helped establish Uganda as a premier birding destination in Africa.
7. Stephen Asiimwe – Former CEO, UTB
His leadership helped refine Uganda’s tourism branding and global presence. His strategic direction laid a foundation for the growth we see today.
8. Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka – Founder, Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH)
A world-renowned wildlife vet, her work with mountain gorillas has intertwined conservation, public health, and community tourism — a model praised across the globe.
9. Kaddu Sebunya – CEO, African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)
An influential voice for African-led conservation, Kaddu has championed sustainable land use, biodiversity protection, and tourism integration across Africa.
10. Samuel Mugisha – MD, Uganda Tourism Board
A key strategist and advocate for tourism investment, he has helped strengthen destination marketing, including regional tourism partnerships.
11. Dr. Andrew Seguya – Former ED, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)
A conservation leader who expanded protected areas, improved tourism infrastructure, and built institutional partnerships that continue to benefit the sector.
12. Edison Nuwamanya – Bird Guide & Nature Conservationist
A trusted name in Uganda’s birding space, Edison is both an expert guide and a mentor to young birders. His field knowledge and dedication are unmatched.

While we celebrate these icons, our deepest appreciation goes to the many unsung heroes — the tour guides, tour operators, community tourism leaders, rangers, site managers, boat captains, lodge staff, and nature enthusiasts across the country.
You are the beating heart of Uganda’s tourism. You wake before dawn to lead birding walks, you cross rivers and forests to help guests connect with nature, you share stories that change lives, and you embody the warm spirit of Uganda.
