World Migratory Bird Day Uganda 2026
Birders Lens proudly joined the Avian Conservation Uganda Society and over 30 participants in celebrating Global Big Birding Day and World Migratory Bird Day 2026 at Lutembe Bay Ramsar Site.
The event began with introductions and an educational briefing led by Blessed Isaac Olupot about migratory birds and the ecological importance of Lutembe Bay as a key wetland habitat. Participants later embarked on a local boat cruise where exciting bird sightings and conservation discussions took place throughout the morning.
Some of the notable species observed included the Striated Heron, Pied Kingfisher, African Jacana, White-browed Coucal, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, African Skimmer, Gray-hooded Gull, Long-toed Lapwing, Spur-winged Goose, White-faced Whistling-Duck, Northern Brown-throated Weaver, and Black-headed Weaver among others.
Interactive discussions were held on bird identification, bird behavior, and migration, allowing participants to learn about why birds migrate, how migration occurs, and the importance of conserving wetlands that support migratory species.
One emotional moment came when participants encountered a dead immature Gray-hooded Gull on a mudflat, sparking reflection on the challenges birds face in the wild and the importance of conservation awareness.
At the conclusion of the excursion, participants recorded a total of 51 bird species, checklist here. The event later ended with recognition awards, group photos, networking, and renewed commitment toward bird and wetland conservation in Uganda.
Through events like these, Birders Lens continues to support conservation, environmental education, and meaningful birding experiences that connect people to nature.
