Musambwa Island Reptile Exploration – Join Birders Lens on 14th March 2026

Situated on the waters of Lake Victoria, Musambwa Island is one of Uganda’s most fascinating natural destinations. Known for its unique biodiversity, the island hosts an impressive population of reptiles, especially snakes, making it an ideal destination for wildlife exploration and conservation education.

On 14th March 2026, Birders Lens will lead an exciting Musambwa Island Reptile Exploration Trip, bringing together wildlife enthusiasts, conservation advocates, photographers, and nature lovers for a memorable learning experience.

Guided by Snake Conservation Experts

This unique expedition will be led by experienced conservationists who are passionate about snake education and wildlife protection:

• James Ntulume, founder of Snakes Uganda, a leading organization dedicated to snake rescue, research, and public education.
• Ismail Hassan from AYISIA, a conservation education platform promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

Together with Birders Lens, these partners will guide participants through engaging discussions and field learning about snake behavior, conservation, and the ecological importance of reptiles.

Snakes of Musambwa Island

Musambwa Island is known for its remarkable reptile population. Visitors may learn about several species, including cobra snakes such as the Black Forest Cobra, one of Africa’s most striking and powerful cobra species.

Despite the presence of many snakes on the island, an interesting fact reassures visitors: there are no recorded cases of snakes biting tourists visiting Musambwa Island. With professional guidance and respect for wildlife, the exploration remains safe and educational.

Women Are Welcome to Participate

The Musambwa Island Reptile Exploration is open to everyone, and women are encouraged to participate in this conservation learning experience. The trip promotes inclusive environmental education where both men and women can learn about wildlife, snake conservation, and ecological protection.

How We Shall Get There

Participants will travel by road to the landing site on Lake Victoria, where a motorized boat will transport the group across the lake to Musambwa Island.

The boat journey offers scenic views of the lake and nearby islands before arriving at Musambwa Island for the guided reptile exploration and conservation sessions.

Further travel coordination and meeting details will be communicated to participants by Birders Lens before the trip through our created WhatsApp Group.

What to Carry for the Trip

As March falls within the rainy season, participants are advised to come well prepared for changing weather conditions and island terrain.

Please remember to carry:

• Raincoats to stay dry during the exploration
• Gumboots for safety while walking on wet or rocky surfaces
• Comfortable outdoor clothing
• Drinking water and personal essentials
• Cameras or binoculars for wildlife observation
