Celebrating Heritage, Fostering Unity: Join the Culture and Heritage Awareness Marathon 2025
In an inspiring blend of culture, community, and wellness, the Calsaar Cultural Initiative is proud to host the Culture and Heritage Awareness Marathon 2025, a vibrant celebration of Uganda’s rich cultural diversity and an urgent call to preserve our shared heritage.
This landmark event, scheduled for Sunday, 27th July 2025 at Kitante Primary School, will feature 5km, 10km, and 21km races, beginning at 6:00 AM. Alongside the run, participants will enjoy cultural performances, art and craft exhibitions, and interactive cultural games all designed to highlight the essence of Uganda’s traditions.
A Vision Rooted in Cultural Preservation and Unity
The marathon falls perfectly in line with the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (May 21st) and is guided by the theme:
“Running for Culture, Unity, and Sustainable Development.”
This theme underpins the broader objective of promoting intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, and community empowerment. It also supports Birders Lens’ commitment to community-led conservation and cultural preservation, recognizing that protecting biodiversity goes hand-in-hand with preserving the indigenous knowledge systems and traditions tied to it.
Milestones So Far
The official launch took place on 17th April 2025 at the Uganda Media Centre, graced by the Ag. Commissioner for Museums and Monuments from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities.
In the lead-up to the marathon, a high-level symposium was held on 8th May at Makerere University, drawing thought leaders and heritage champions including:
- Dr. Gesa Simplicious – Public Relations, Uganda Tourism Board
- Bashir Hangi – Public Relations, Uganda Wildlife Authority
- Ms. Barbra Babweteera – Executive Director, Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU)
- Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka – Founder & CEO, Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH)
Their insights emphasized the intersection between cultural heritage and sustainable development, reinforcing the need for action and community engagement.
