Birders Lens Praises Mayooba Eco Foundation for the Launch of the ‘Plant for Primates’ Initiative
Advancing Conservation Through Strategic Partnership Support
On July 19, 2025, Mayooba Eco Foundation officially launched the Plant for Primates Initiative at Mukono Church of Uganda, Buhoma, adjacent to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a region globally renowned for its biodiversity, particularly its population of Mountain Gorillas.
Although Birders Lens was not physically represented at the event, our support for the initiative underscores one of our core commitments: actively backing community-based conservation efforts across East Africa. Conservation is not always about being on the ground; sometimes, it’s about empowering those already rooted there.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mayooba Eco Foundation on reaching this vital milestone. Their forward-thinking approach aligns seamlessly with our own mission to bolster grassroots organizations driving real, measurable impact in biodiversity hotspots.
About the Plant for Primates Initiative
This community-based tree-growing campaign was conceptualized to integrate conservation with livelihood enhancement in areas surrounding critical primate habitats. The initiative seeks to:
- Enhance biodiversity by increasing tree cover in buffer zones near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
- Promote economic resilience through fruit tree planting and value addition to bamboo products.
- Reduce human-wildlife conflict by using non-palatable species as natural buffers.
- Foster environmental literacy through targeted conservation education in schools.
- Empower women and youth by providing green job training and climate-smart enterprise development.
- Advance Uganda’s climate goals in alignment with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goal 13.
Key Highlights from the Launch
Despite our physical absence, the impact of this launch was evident:
✅ 250 tree seedlings including avocado, mango, jackfruit, and guava were planted.
✅ 10 bamboo seedlings marked the start of a local green economy.
✅ Over 100 community members received hands-on training in bamboo craftsmanship.
✅ A community ambassador, Kyasiimire Immaculate Shantel, was crowned to lead grassroots conservation engagement.
Each planted tree was given a name or dedication, symbolizing personal and organizational commitments to safeguarding nature. Dignitaries from conservation agencies, local government, religious institutions, and partner NGOs took part in these symbolic gestures of support.
Empowering Conservation Through Partnerships
Mayooba Eco Foundation’s ability to convene stakeholders from across sectors like the public, private, and civil society is a testament to the power of collaboration. Key partners recognized at the event included:
- Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH)
- Uganda Tourism Board
- Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities
- Uganda Wildlife Authority
- Bamboo Innovation Hub
- Kaynela Farms
- Rotary Club of Kanungu
These partnerships are not merely symbolic since they are instrumental in scaling conservation efforts and creating sustainable value chains that benefit both wildlife and communities.
Practical Community Empowerment: Bamboo Skills Training
In a region where natural resource dependence is high, Mayooba Eco Foundation is responding with innovation. The event featured a bamboo value addition training facilitated by the Bamboo Innovation Hub. Locals learned to create:
- Eco-friendly travel mugs and utensils
- Household items from bamboo
- Market-ready crafts for income generation
This practical skill-building not only reduces pressure on forest resources but also lays the groundwork for a circular, conservation-aligned economy.
Strategic Vision: What’s Next for Plant for Primates
The Plant for Primates Initiative is not a one-off event—it’s a scalable model. Future plans include:
- Village Coordinators: To oversee tree survival, support bamboo care, and guide eco-tourist engagement in planting activities.
- Mobile App Monitoring: Ensuring transparency and accountability via digital recordkeeping.
- Expansion Across Uganda: Rolling out to other communities bordering protected areas.
- School Conservation Clubs: Launching environmental education as part of co-curricular learning.
