Birding with Ms. Deva: Rain, Birds, and Beauty in Uganda’s Wild Spaces
Our time with Ms. Deva from the USA was a beautiful reminder of why birding is more than just a hobby it’s a deeply rewarding way to connect with nature, people, and place. Her passion for birds, nature and her adventurous spirit made each excursion meaningful and memorable.
A Rain-Soaked Reward at Lutembe Bay Wetland
Lutembe Bay Wetland, a Ramsar-listed site on the shores of Lake Victoria, is always a special destination on our birding calendar. On our recent visit with Ms. Deva, the skies opened up mid-excursion, drenching us in a surprise downpour. But for birders, a little rain is part of the experience. We embraced the elements, laughed through the storm, and once the rain cleared, we were rewarded with fresh bird activity and new sightings different from our previous visit. The shifting weather only added to the drama and magic of the wetland.
Species highlights included a mix of wetland specialists, shorebirds, and colorful forest-edge species. Ms. Deva’s enthusiasm never waned, even when her notepad got a little soggy. The experience proved once again that the best birding moments often come when you least expect them.
Peaceful Trails at Entebbe Botanical Gardens
A few days earlier, we had explored the tranquil Entebbe Botanical Gardens, one of Uganda’s hidden gems for birders. Set on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, these gardens offer a rich mix of habitats from open lawns and lakeshore to dense forest patches.
With binoculars in hand and a checklist ready, we wandered through towering trees echoing with the calls of the Great Blue Turaco, Ross’s Turaco, and flocks of weavers, sunbirds, and flycatchers. The gardens were alive with color and sound. Ms. Deva was especially thrilled by the photographic opportunities here, as many birds perch low and light conditions are favorable.
The combination of accessibility, beauty, and biodiversity made Botanical Gardens a standout location during our birding circuit. It was also a great place to reflect, slow down, and simply appreciate Uganda’s rich natural heritage.

Throughout our time together, Ms. Deva’s appreciation for nature reminded us of the deep joy that birding brings. Whether soaked in a downpour or bathed in golden sunlight beneath forest canopies, every moment was one of learning, sharing, and awe.
